# Feral File Status

Every work we've published, and whether it still works — checked from the
outside, the way a collector's wallet or browser fetches art. Generated

## What a published work is

A work published on Feral File is a chain of references: a token on a
blockchain points to a smart contract, the contract points to metadata, the
metadata points to the files of the artwork, and those files run in a browser
or on an Art Computer. Some works also read data from their contract while
they run. A work is alive when every link in that chain answers.

Each link has a keeper. The blockchain keeps the token, the contract, and
anything stored on chain. Content-addressed files can be kept by anyone who
cares to pin them. Whatever remains depends on Feral File's own servers. The
fewer links that need us, the more permanent the work. This page watches how
many works still need us, and for which links.

One honest limit, because it is widely misunderstood: putting a file on IPFS
does not copy it anywhere. A work stays available only while someone,
somewhere, keeps a copy. What content addressing adds is that every copy is
equal and verifiable — a collector's copy counts exactly as much as ours,
and none can be altered without detection. When this page publishes a work's
content address, keeping that work alive becomes something any collector,
museum, or archive can do with one command, without asking our permission.
That is the invitation.

## Works, by what their media depends on

1. Resolve without Feral File: 17,563 works (every content-addressed media file verified on ipfs.io, 20260803)
2. Should resolve without us, but currently fail on public gateways: 184 works (HLS video: master playlist resolves, stream files unreachable from any gateway — video plays only from our CDN)
3. Depend entirely on Feral File: 4,959 Bitmark-era
   works across 215 series in
   17 exhibitions (as of 2026-08-03),
   sole media copy on cdn.feralfileassets.com. Their ownership records are
   already safe: the Bitmark blockchain (retired 2025) was preserved as a
   verifiable archive — data on IPFS, Merkle root on Ethereum, timestamp on
   Bitcoin (https://github.com/bitmark-inc/bitmarkd/wiki/bitmark-archive). Plus 17,261 works on Ethereum and Tezos whose media likewise lives only on our CDN (discovered 20260803); they follow the same remediation path.
   Last CDN probe 2026-08-03: 215 of
   215 series resolved (one probe per series; editions share
   files). Remediation targeted within 2-3 months: a content-addressed copy
   per work, or a dated exception with an owner. DONE for every series as of 2026-08-04: all 215 series have byte-verified content-addressed copies (398 GB; addresses in https://status.feralfile.com/data/pin_manifest_2026-08-04.csv).

## What we check, and what we don't yet

A work RESOLVES when every reference in its chain can be fetched from public
infrastructure. These checks currently measure the ARTWORK FILES: every file
of every edition is requested over the public gateways wallets and browsers
use. A file counts as resolving only when a public gateway serves it — our
own infrastructure answering is not enough.

Not yet measured: the METADATA LINK (whether each token's on-chain reference
is itself content-addressed), and whether a work PLAYS (what resolves also
renders as the artist intended). On-chain data is not probed: it survives
with the chain itself. The page is regenerated from the raw data on every
update.

## Updates

- **2026-08-04 — Every Bitmark-era series now has a verified content-addressed copy.** All 215 series — 398 GB, every file of every work whose only copy lived on our CDN — have been added to IPFS and verified byte-for-byte against the originals. The addresses are published in the pin manifest beside this page, so any collector, museum, or archive can hold a copy of any work with one command. The works' own references still point at our CDN; linking them to these copies is the next step.
- **2026-08-03 — First full census of Ethereum and Tezos works.** Every file of every edition — 35,008 works, 106,392 files — was fetched through the public gateways wallets and browsers use. 17,563 works have all media content-addressed and resolving on ipfs.io. 184 works have content-addressed media that currently fails on a public gateway. 17,261 works' media lives only on our CDN; they join the Bitmark-era works on the remediation path. These checks measure the artwork files; the metadata link and rendering are not yet measured.
- **2026-08-03 — Works that depend entirely on us, enumerated.** Published the complete list of works whose only copy sits behind Feral File's own servers: 4,959 works across 215 series in 17 exhibitions, all minted on the Bitmark blockchain before Feral File moved to Ethereum and Tezos. Every series' media was checked and currently resolves. Remediation — a content-addressed copy for every work, so each resolves independently of us — is targeted within 2 to 3 months.
